Today I Learned.. About the Success of the Metro Card

The Metro Card was implemented in 1993, and by 2003, tokens were completely whittled out of the Metro system completely. It is a miracle that this system has been this successful and has lasted this long. However, it wasn't without complaints. When the tokens were no longer accepted, many people were outraged. But eventually, everyone started to adopt the new cards. The cards are very simple; it is a small plastic card with a magnetic strip at the bottom. Nobody knows how it works, but it just does.

The Metro is used over 5 million times in New York alone, so it's extremely important that the MTA Card works as flawlessly as possible. This shows how important the entry way to the subway is and this card does it. Eventually, the goal is to get it to be completely wireless, whether payment comes through the phone or in some other form.
